iPhone 4 and weird solutions to common problems

I recently bought an used iPhone 4 off ebay, got it for a killer price and in great condition. Last time when i had bought an iPhone 3GS, it took almost 2 months before i could get my hands on it, but this time i was lucky i got the phone in approx 3 weeks. So the first thing i had to do was get it IMEI unlocked so that i can use any GSM sim with it, a.k.a Factory Unlocked phone. But my excitement was for a very short while i realized the first problem with the phone:

home button not responding
Yuck, what’s the use of an iPhone when the most important button is not working. I was frustrated and i was feeling a bit cheated since the seller hadn’t mentioned the same in the listing. Maybe the damage occurred in transit because the packaging was poor. Anyways, from the moment i got hold of this iPhone 4, i was in search for a solution to this problem. After all possible options found in different forums and thread, the conclusion in my case was, that i will have to replace the iPhone 4 home button flex cable. Disappointing, but no choice left. I ordered the required part also. But i was in for some real surprise that fine day when i accidentally dropped the iPhone on the floor. The distance wasn’t too much for the iPhone to travel in the air since it slipped off my hand when i was having lunch. I would say approx less than 2 feets. I was ready for another shock, i started thinking which part i will have to order this time, but after i picked up the phone, i found everything intact. I was relieved but voila, the home button started working on it’s own. No more misses and each and every time i clicked, the home button responded. That fall did something which bought everything in place. What can i say, i found one of the most weirdest solution to this problem. I will not recommend this to anyone, so if you wish to try this, it’s at your own risk, please don’t hold me responsible for any damage please. So now i know every time my home button stops working, i just need to throw the phone on the floor, accidentally though 🙂

earpiece stopped working
A day before i posted this, the earpiece stopped working. I didn’t realize this initially but then after i received couple of calls, all i heard was pin drop silence from the other end. I knew i was in for another trouble. I thought this time i will have to replace the earpiece. So yet another search began and once again i found one of the most weirdest solution to this problem, this time it’s an official solution that i found. All i had to do was blow hard enough inside the phone using the space left open by the dock connector below the home button. And voila, the earpiece started working.

My imagination has stopped working now. What an unexpected an unbelievable world of products this is. I have been lucky in both the cases since so far i didn’t had to change any of the parts of the phone. I enjoy dissembling iPhones. I already have 3 iPhones with me in the dissembled form. Who knows what in store for me next. I am just so eager to dissemble this one. At the same time i pray otherwise 🙂

iPhone 2G Factory Unlocked. I was surprised!

I recently bought a used iPhone 2G from an online store. It had a cracked LCD so got it at a very good price. The most interesting part of this purchase was that after i restored the firmware to 3.1.3, the surprise was that it got unlocked automatically. I didn’t use any of the popularly used options for unlocking this phone. 🙂

The only thing i don’t know is in which country was iPhone 2G launched as factory unlocked? Or how come i am so lucky that i have an unlocked one.

Even today, an iPhone 2G is far better than any other cheaper Android phones. If someone wants to buy an Android phone in the budget of 6-7k, i think an iPhone is always a better option. Android really sucks on lower end handsets which don’t provide quality hardware to run it as it’s full potential.
